Tournament Poker is different from the usual ring game and you may need to change the style of play as the number of participants decreases and stack increases in the tournament. This is the third and final article in a series about playing poker in tournaments.
Now we have reached the end of this series - this part is about the final stages of tournaments. What makes the final phase so interesting is that what we seek when we notify us of a tournament - money, glory and fame - is now within reach!
The general strategy used in the middle phase should also be used during the final stage, but there are certain aspects during the final phase, which is unique. The first is the oh so disdainful bubble.
When the bubble is approaching the game is usually tight for themselves properly, at some tables sometimes played virtually no hands at all. Players put themselves to bed and continues to add themselves to get into the money. This is a golden opportunity for us to build on the stack when most players are focused on just pull into the money they will throw hands as they normally would have played.
If we are not thanked shorts, we should put maximum pressure on the smaller stacking and on weak players who just tries to fold into the money. It is simply a great opportunity to increase the stack with relatively little risk, then the opponents will hardly want to risk falling off the money.
If we are shorts thanked, we should still try to take advantage of the bubble. We need to be aggressive and press the stack that we can still damage in an attempt to build our staple so that we have a chance to get really far. If the rest of the table is weak should we be aggressive and strong! Sometimes, we will of course be called and go out, but more often, our aggressive game to pay off - we will steal enough blinds to give us the chance to come to final table or win!
When the bubble burst, it is common with many all-ins and loose games, where small stacks which folded the money is desperate. This is the time for us to wait for a good hand, that does not unnecessarily involve ourselves in pots.
When all hope in prize money is usually a situation similar to the bubble occur. It is also very common with excessively tight game when the final table approaching. These are situations that we should be alert and try to take advantage of.
The final phase of a poker tournaments is in fact just about situations. Since the blinds are very high compared with the average stack, it is essential to have good timing in our theft attempts, and re-Steal. When we come so far, we should also have pretty good reads on other players, so we should be able to have some idea of how we can exploit their playing styles.
I hope that these three articles about the different stages of a tournament will help you find profitable situations as well as the correct poker tournament strategy to take advantage of them. From there, is the final table only a couple flops away
